What to Look for in Ballistic Gel Tests

Ballistic-gel testing is useful when it is treated as a measurement tool—not a spectacle. The meaningful questions concern penetration, projectile condition, and repeatable behavior. Dramatic temporary cavities, flying blocks, and slow-motion effects may attract attention, but they do not by themselves establish defensive performance.

Start with penetration

The video identifies the FBI’s commonly cited 12-to-18-inch penetration range as the basic performance window for defensive ammunition in properly prepared and validated gelatin. A result inside that range is acceptable; exceeding it does not automatically earn “bonus points,” while inadequate penetration can prevent a projectile from reaching vital structures.

Examine the recovered projectile

After the shot, look at the projectile’s end state. Did it expand consistently? Did it fragment? Did its construction remain intact? The path through the medium also matters: note whether the projectile traveled straight, yawed, fragmented, or behaved inconsistently.

Ignore effects that cannot be meaningfully quantified

A block jumping off the table or displaying a large temporary cavity can look impressive on video. Those effects should not displace the measurements the test can actually support. Gelatin is a standardized comparison medium, not a complete model of a human body, and dramatic footage is not a substitute for defensible data.

One shot is not a test protocol

Reliable evaluation requires multiple rounds and recorded results. A single favorable shot cannot show consistency. Useful testing controls the gelatin, temperature, calibration, distance, firearm and barrel length, velocity, barriers, and ammunition lot while documenting each projectile’s performance.

What to record

  • Calibration and condition of the gelatin
  • Firearm, barrel length, ammunition, and lot number
  • Impact velocity and test distance
  • Penetration depth for every shot
  • Expansion, retained weight, fragmentation, and recovered diameter
  • Projectile path, yaw, and consistency across the sample
  • Any intermediate barrier used in the protocol

The takeaway

Verified gel testing should be methodical and somewhat uneventful. Pay attention to repeatable measurements and the projectile’s behavior—not the most visually dramatic moment. The goal is to compare ammunition under controlled conditions and understand its limitations, not to recreate a wound or predict every real-world outcome.
