Charles “Chuck” Pressburg is a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major, Special Operations veteran, firearms instructor, consultant, and founder of Presscheck Training and Consulting. He retired on January 1, 2017, after 26 years of active Army service, much of it in Special Operations and Special Mission Units.

Pressburg’s career combined operational experience with science and technology, acquisition, combat development, and human-factors work. Army and Special Operations Career

Pressburg served ten years in the 75th Ranger Regiment and approximately two years as a rifle and sniper squad leader in the 82nd Airborne Division. His Ranger assignments included leading personnel in operational environments and service as platoon sergeant of a 65-person Ranger strike force that deployed twice to Afghanistan during 2001–2002.

He later became a founding member of the U.S. Army Asymmetric Warfare Group, attending its first selection class and first Operational Training Course. Pressburg spent approximately 20 months conducting operations in Iraq with AWG in support of conventional and special-operations forces.

His formal education included Defense Acquisition University’s Combat Developer’s Course and the Army’s Human Factors Engineering/MANPRINT course. This background gave him experience on both sides of capability development: the operational end user identifying a problem and the acquisition community attempting to produce a solution.

A weapon or accessory does not operate independently. It exists within a system involving the user, weapon, ammunition, sighting system, supporting equipment, environment, and task. A technically impressive product may still fail if it adds unnecessary complexity, creates training problems, interferes with other equipment, or does not address the actual mission.

Equipment must solve a real problem, function with the complete system, and earn its place on the weapon or the user.

Presscheck Training and Consulting

Pressburg founded Presscheck Training and Consulting in 2015. The company provides pistol, rifle, close-quarters, urban-operations, and night-vision instruction for military personnel, law enforcement, and vetted civilian students.

His courses convert operational problems into training tasks that can be reproduced safely and evaluated objectively. The purpose is not simply to tell stories from a long career. It is to identify the underlying principle, create a relevant exercise, establish a standard, and give students a way to maintain the capability after the course.

No-Fail Pistol and Accountable Marksmanship

Pressburg’s best-known curriculum, No-Fail Pistol, centers on difficult, high-consequence handgun shots in which the cost of a miss is unacceptable. Accuracy is not treated as an abstract range goal. It is the means of solving a problem without creating an additional casualty or failing to stop a threat.

The course emphasizes realistic assessment of personal capability, target discrimination, visual information, pre-shot diagnostics, and accountability for every projectile. The shooter must understand what the sights are reporting, recognize the difficulty of the target, and decide whether current conditions support taking the shot.

Capability is dynamic. A shot successfully performed during practice may not be available later when distance, light, position, movement, stress, fatigue, or injury changes. Confidence based on yesterday’s performance cannot substitute for evaluating the shot that exists now.

The No-Fail Drill provides an external measure of core handgun performance. Like any drill, it does not represent the complete tactical problem. Its value is that it isolates and measures a capability that may be required when precision and accountability are critical.

No-Fail Rifle and Technical Understanding

No-Fail Rifle extends the same consequence-driven philosophy to the carbine. Technical subjects such as zeroing, trajectory, mechanical offset, sight height, positional stability, and rifle cant matter because they affect whether the projectile arrives where the shooter intends.

A shooter should understand not merely a memorized hold, but why the hold exists and how position or equipment changes it. Technical knowledge becomes operationally useful when it allows the shooter to diagnose the problem before firing and make an informed correction.

Target Acquisition and Target Discrimination

Pressburg distinguishes finding a target from determining whether it should be engaged. Optics, lasers, and night-vision systems may improve target acquisition, but they do not eliminate the requirement to identify what is being observed and interpret its significance.

This distinction becomes especially important in darkness, crowded environments, and close quarters. Technical speed without correct discrimination can make an error happen faster. The user must combine equipment, visual information, judgment, and marksmanship.

Night Vision and Low-Light Operations

Presscheck’s night-vision instruction addresses equipment setup, laser employment, zeroing methods, weapon configuration, target discrimination, and the human-performance problems created by operating through night-vision devices.

Night vision increases access to information, but it also changes depth perception, field of view, visual detail, equipment interaction, and communication. Technology does not replace judgment. It changes the information available and creates new demands that must be trained.

CQB and Shoothouse Instruction

Pressburg’s CQB and shoothouse work connects technical shooting to judgment, movement, geometry, communication, and target discrimination. Close-quarters environments compress time and distance while increasing the consequences of errors involving muzzle direction, angles, teammates, unknown people, and identification.

His human-factors background is especially relevant here. The operator, weapon, equipment, environment, and mission must function as a complete system. A technique that looks efficient in isolation may create unacceptable costs when viewed within the full problem.

Instruction Through Consequence

Pressburg frequently uses operational and real-world incidents as instructional vignettes. The story establishes context, but the teaching value comes from extracting the problem: what information was available, what capability was required, what decision had to be made, and what happened when performance succeeded or failed.

Drills should follow problems rather than exist as disconnected entertainment. A useful exercise identifies the required skill, creates a repeatable way to test it, and explains how the result relates to real application.

That model also places responsibility on the student. Every fired round has a destination and a consequence. Professional shooting requires enough technical skill to solve difficult problems, enough judgment to recognize when a shot is justified, and enough honesty to know whether the shot is currently within the shooter’s ability.
