Tim Chandler is a Rangemaster staff instructor, defensive-firearms educator, and defensive-shotgun specialist whose work is rooted in the armed-citizen training community. He teaches with Justified Defensive Concepts and has developed coursework through sustained formal study, assistant instruction, mentorship, and years of direct teaching. His principal areas of expertise include defensive shotgun, armed-citizen firearms, instructor development, and training methodology.
Professional Biography
After receiving poor concealed-carry instruction, Chandler sought more serious education and attended a handgun course at Blackwater USA in 2001. He later established a goal of completing approximately 100 hours of formal training each year, studying defensive handgun, shotgun, combatives, performance shooting, and civilian self-defense.
Todd Green first invited Chandler to assist with classes. That work expanded through John Murphy and Tom Givens, all of whom encouraged him to develop and teach his own material. Chandler began presenting independent coursework in 2017 and has since taught through organizations including Justified Defensive Concepts, FPF Training, 360 Performance Shooting, Citizen-Defender, and Rangemaster.
This student-to-instructor path gave him extensive exposure to recurring student errors, class safety, diagnosis and correction, demonstrations, pacing, and communication. His instruction reflects the comparison and synthesis of multiple training systems rather than reliance on a self-appointed title or claimed operational résumé.
Areas of Expertise
Chandler is particularly associated with defensive-shotgun education. His instruction integrates technical shooting, equipment selection and setup, patterning, ammunition, manipulation, decision-making, and the capabilities of the individual user.
He graduated from Rangemaster’s Shotgun Instructor and Advanced Shotgun Instructor courses and assisted with the first two Advanced Shotgun Instructor classes. His Rangemaster pistol training includes the Instructor, Advanced Instructor, Master Instructor, and Professional Instructor courses. He also earned Rangemaster’s Pistol Master award and won the Defensive Pistol Match at a Tactical Conference.
Notable Work and Contributions
With Ashton Ray, Chandler developed Shotgun 360 and helped teach Rangemaster shotgun programs, including instructor-level courses. In 2025, Rangemaster named Chandler and Ray to its staff-instructor cadre and announced that they would assume primary responsibility for its operator- and instructor-level defensive-shotgun training. The two instructors also presented a training block at the 2025 International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Annual Training Conference.
