Professional Biography
Chad Mercer is a former U.S. Marine infantryman, certified gunsmith, former U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security armorer and firearms instructor, gunsmithing educator, technical writer, and Primary & Secondary contributor. His experience connects operational firearms use with institutional maintenance, high-round-count failure analysis, armorer education, and workforce development.
Mercer served in the Marine Corps as an 0311 infantryman before pursuing professional gunsmithing. He later joined the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Diplomatic Security, serving first as an armorer in the Defensive Equipment and Armored Vehicle Branch and later as a senior instructor in the Diplomatic Security Service training center’s Firearms Training Unit.
That work exposed Mercer to maintenance and failure data on a scale rarely available to commercial armorers. In his P&S article “Yes, Experience Matters,” he described working within a small staff responsible for a worldwide inventory of approximately 40,000 weapons while supporting a training unit that subjected M4A1s, Mk18s, pistols, machine guns, and other firearms to unusually high round counts.
The value of that environment was repeated observation. Broken bolts, worn components, maintenance cycles, lubricant performance, ammunition problems, excessive cleaning, and predictable service-life issues could be compared across many weapons rather than inferred from one example. Mercer’s technical perspective emphasizes that formal certification is a starting point; meaningful expertise develops through sustained exposure to patterns, failures, repairs, and verified results.
Mercer has also taught armorer and firearms courses through Practical Firearms Training and Z3ro Solutions LLC. His instruction examines firearms design, mechanical theory, designer intent, maintenance, wear, troubleshooting, and the reasons a system behaves as it does rather than reducing armorer education to parts replacement.
In higher education, Mercer has served as chair of the gunsmithing program at Murray State College in Oklahoma. College and state sources documented his role in developing the institution’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Gunsmithing Technology, a program intended to combine traditional gunsmithing with machining, CAD, additive manufacturing, laser welding, technical writing, critical thinking, and other skills sought by modern firearms employers.
