Optimizing What is Available

Ruger 1022 22LR, S&W M36 38 Special, Colt 1911 45acp, Stoeger Coach Gun 12ga. Just let your wheels turn and think about this realistic problem.
A family member/friend/neighbor approaches you for help. They are concerned with riots/home invasions/horse thieves/whatever. They need your help with home defense.
One or any combination of similar may be the only weapons someone has access to. Not everyone can spend money for a new gun and then invest both time and money into training (and ammo). This is what they have and they have moderate understanding and subpar proficiency with them.
Where do you start?
Which would you recommend over others? Why wouldn’t you recommend the others?
I am contacted regularly about what best is for this problem. My solution involves a time and money investment, and is not viable for some time due to lack of proficiency by the user. So, I explain, in a perfect world you get a BCM/SOLGW/Sionics carbine, a couple cases of ammo, take a couple classes that are reinforced by solid range trips and in a few years you are solid. Not everyone has the coin, the time, and they want that solution now. Looking into what they do have and determining how it fits into their lives and the given problem is my more realistic approach. Next determine what ammo or accessories might help them solve the issue of making the guns more viable.
I hope you don’t laugh at them and call them a poor.
