Phil Wong is a Tucson-based firearms instructor, Massad Ayoob Group instructor, competitive shooter, Glock armorer, armed-security professional, and rangemaster with the Pima County Shooting Sports Program. Professional Biography
Wong’s firearms background began during U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Knox in 1988, where he qualified Expert with the Beretta M9. He became an NRA-certified Basic Pistol and Personal Protection instructor in 1993 and, the following year, became one of Arizona’s early instructors authorized to provide training for the state’s concealed-weapons permit program.
His long-term development spans handgun instruction, concealed carry, competition, firearm maintenance, deadly-force education, and the continued study of use-of-force law and decision-making.
Massad Ayoob Group
Wong completed the Massad Ayoob Group curriculum and progressed through its Staff Instructor and Deadly Force Instructor programs. That training combines shooting, tactics, legal principles, decision-making, documentation, and the evidentiary consequences that may follow a defensive-force incident.
This broader framework recognizes that the ability to fire accurately is only one component of armed defense. The student must also understand when force is lawful, recognize circumstances in which disengagement or de-escalation is possible, and account for what happens after force is used.
Instructor Development
Wong’s education includes Rangemaster instructor development and training with instructors representing shooting performance, close-contact defense, concealed carry, and use-of-force law. Exposure to different systems allows him to compare methods and identify what fits a particular student or problem rather than relying on a single instructional lineage.
His Glock armorer background adds maintenance and mechanical knowledge to that teaching. Equipment selection should account for reliability, fit, intended use, maintenance requirements, and the student’s ability to operate the firearm safely and consistently.
Teaching and Performance
Wong taught through Gator Farm Tactical Applications, providing handgun, concealed-carry, legal, and advanced firearms instruction to armed citizens and professional students. His instruction has addressed safe handling, equipment selection, drawing, reloads, one-handed shooting, positional work, and lawful defensive force.
He also uses competitive shooting and qualification performance to test technique and equipment. Demonstrated shooting ability supports instructional credibility, but his approach recognizes that marksmanship remains incomplete without judgment, legal knowledge, and the ability to make responsible decisions.
Wong currently works with the Pima County Shooting Sports Program as a rangemaster and instructor, supporting safe public range operations and firearms education.
