Matt Helm is a Texas-based custom knifemaker and designer known for clean, practical fixed-blade knives intended for everyday carry, outdoor use, and professional applications. His work combines the individual attention of a custom maker with designs capable of being translated into repeatable production through his collaboration with Dauntless Manufacturing.
Helm grew up in rural West Texas in an outdoor-oriented and mechanically inclined family. He has described early exposure to tools, machinery, shooting, outdoor literature, and his father’s elevator-maintenance work as important influences on his appreciation for functional design and careful fit and finish.
He began making knives in 2011 after studying makers and work-in-progress material available through the knife community. His early development was influenced by established craftsmen and designers including Andy Roy, Rick Marchand, Lucas Burnley, Jesper Voxnaes, and Daniel Winkler, several of whom offered practical guidance on equipment, material, and process.
Design Philosophy
Helm designs tools meant to be carried, used, maintained, and improved in character through years of wear. His work emphasizes efficient dimensions, durable materials, useful blade geometry, secure ergonomics, and an understated visual language rooted in traditional working knives.
His designs also treat the sheath and attachment method as parts of the complete system. A capable fixed blade has limited practical value if it is uncomfortable to carry, difficult to access, unnecessarily conspicuous, or routinely left behind. The working system includes the knife, handle, sheath, placement, clothing, daily activity, and intended application.
Helm has explored conventional utility knives as well as reverse-edge and defensive designs influenced by problems addressed within the ShivWorks training community. Those projects examine how blade profile, handle length, indexing, access, retention, and confined-space use change when the design is intended for close-contact emergencies rather than ordinary cutting work.
Custom Work and Dauntless Manufacturing
Helm’s designs developed a following in firearms, precision-rifle, law-enforcement, outdoor, and everyday-carry communities. Feedback from people who carried and used the knives helped establish a reputation based on function rather than appearance alone.
His collaboration with Zach Thull and Chris Moss of Dauntless Manufacturing moved selected designs from limited custom work into repeatable larger-scale production. Dauntless currently maintains a substantial Matt Helm collaboration catalog that includes the Work Knife and Dogbone families along with additional utility, outdoor, and specialized designs.
This partnership allows Helm to concentrate on geometry, ergonomics, and intended use while Dauntless contributes manufacturing engineering, process control, finishing, and production capacity. The resulting knives retain a clear designer identity while becoming available to more users than one maker could supply through individual shop work.

Within the Extended P&S Network, Helm contributes a systems-oriented view of knives as carried tools. His work connects design, fabrication, sheath and mounting choices, clothing, access, and realistic application.
