Professional Biography
Jim Shanahan is a firearms instructor, competitive shooter, retired United States Army noncommissioned officer, former Department of the Army civilian instructor, and owner and senior instructor of Advanced Performance Shooting in Missouri. His career joins military instruction, tactical training, practical-shooting competition, civilian defensive-firearms education, and instructor development.
Shanahan served 21 years in the Army. His assignments included Light Infantry Platoon Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, senior NCO with the Directorate of Common Leader Training, and Senior Enlisted Advisor for Fordham University’s Military Science program. After retiring in 2005, he continued as an Army contractor teaching basic-training soldiers, then worked in Afghanistan teaching subjects ranging from shooting skills to tactical casualty care, indirect-fire support, and close-air support.
In 2008, Shanahan became a Department of the Army civilian instructor in the Advanced Law Enforcement Training Division. Through 2014, his primary responsibilities included preparing Department of Defense Special Reaction Teams for advanced marksmanship, planning, hostage-rescue tasks, and high-risk entry. This work expanded his instructional experience beyond individual weapons handling into tactical decision-making and team performance.
Shanahan began Advanced Performance Shooting in 1998 while still serving in the Army. He also pursued practical-shooting competition at a high level, ultimately earning USPSA Grand Master classification in Limited Division and competing in pistol and multigun events. He has described firing approximately 40,000 rounds annually during a decade of intensive competition and training. That experience reinforced an approach in which speed, accuracy, consistency, and improvement are measured rather than assumed.
His modern instruction emphasizes diagnostic coaching, deliberate practice, quantified skill, instructor development, and dependable performance on demand. Shanahan’s central premise is that a professional instructor develops over time and remains a student.
