Professional Biography
Jim Hodge is the founder of Hodge Defense Systems, a former police officer, former government security contractor, firearms-industry consultant, and small-arms product developer. His work centers on treating the AR-pattern rifle as an integrated system rather than a collection of independently selected components.
Hodge’s professional relationship with the AR platform began during his law-enforcement career. In interviews, he has described entering private security and government-contracting work after September 11, 2001, including work associated with Blackwater. Those experiences informed his understanding of professional weapons requirements and helped establish relationships across the firearms, optics, accessories, and defense industries.
Before building rifles under his own name, Hodge worked behind the scenes evaluating equipment and providing feedback to manufacturers. He later formed Hodge Defense Systems as a small, collaborative development company focused on requirements, materials, manufacturing partnerships, testing, and refinement.
Hodge Defense is best known for its Mod 1 and Mod 2 carbines and for collaborative work involving receiver architecture, barrel specifications, operating-system balance, and handguard systems. The company’s current materials describe proprietary receiver forgings, cold-hammer-forged barrels made to Hodge specifications, optimized gas ports, and tapered bores. Hodge has characterized his own role less as that of a conventional engineer and more as a requirements architect, system integrator, evaluator, and design collaborator.
Because this work involves multiple engineers and manufacturing partners, individual technical features should not automatically be credited to Hodge alone. His clearest contribution is the integration process: translating end-user needs into specifications, coordinating specialist manufacturers, testing the resulting system, and refining it based on performance.
