His strongest projects balance enthusiast knowledge with business discipline. Historical appeal can support a product, but nostalgia alone does not guarantee demand. Similarly, a technically appealing configuration must remain feasible for a manufacturer to produce and for a distributor to sell. Cloessner’s work connects those considerations before Lipsey’s commits to a production run.
An important part of that method is recruiting specialized knowledge rather than claiming personal expertise in every detail. Cloessner identifies the requirement and leads the distributor-side project, experienced users help refine practical features, and the manufacturer remains responsible for engineering, testing, and production. The Ultimate Carry J-Frame
The Lipsey’s Exclusive Smith & Wesson Ultimate Carry J-frame is the clearest example of Cloessner’s method. Independent firearms writer Mike Wood has described him as the “Father of the Ultimate Carry J-Frame,” reflecting Cloessner’s role in recognizing the market opportunity, bringing the concept to Smith & Wesson, and driving it from the distributor side.
The project asked why serious users should need to buy a new J-frame and immediately pay a gunsmith to correct commonly recognized limitations. The resulting requirements included improved sights, useful stocks, a refined trigger system, better durability, proper regulation for defensive ammunition, and removal of the internal lock. Cloessner also advocated for returning the .32 H&R Magnum chambering to Smith & Wesson’s domestic J-frame lineup.
Cloessner recruited experienced revolver practitioners Darryl Bolke and Bryan Eastridge to provide end-user input. Eastridge has explained that the core concept belonged to Cloessner, while he and Bolke helped refine matters including sights, stocks, ammunition regulation, and accuracy testing. Andrew Gore and the Smith & Wesson engineering team translated those requirements into a producible firearm and developed the manufacturer-side design and endurance improvements.
The finished revolvers incorporated features that previously required aftermarket work while remaining factory-produced defensive handguns. Their reception demonstrated demand for modernized small revolvers and helped create momentum for later Lipsey’s and Smith & Wesson projects. Cloessner’s insistence on a no-lock configuration also contributed practical market evidence during the broader movement toward Smith & Wesson revolvers without the internal locking system; it should not be confused with sole responsibility for the company’s later decisions.
Revolver Development
Cloessner’s revolver work extends well beyond the Ultimate Carry series. His projects have included the revival of Smith & Wesson Mountain Gun configurations, the return of Night Guard concepts, and additional .32-caliber defensive revolvers. These projects combine features valued by experienced users with configurations that large manufacturers may not otherwise place in their standard catalogs.
His long relationship with Ruger has produced exclusives involving distinctive cartridges, barrel lengths, frames, finishes, stocks, and sights. Documented examples include the mid-frame .44 Special Blackhawk Flattop and specialized Bisley revolvers, including five-shot .454 Casull and .480 Ruger configurations developed through discussion among Lipsey’s, Ruger personnel, and knowledgeable shooters.
These projects show that firearms innovation does not always require inventing a new operating system. It can also mean recognizing continuing utility in an abandoned chambering, restoring a well-regarded configuration, or applying modern production and features without losing what made the original concept useful.
Semiautomatic and Historical Projects
Cloessner’s portfolio also includes semiautomatic pistols and collector-oriented firearms. He worked with Glock on the retro Pistole 80 and first-generation Glock 17 projects, which reproduced historically important configurations with appropriate frames, markings, sights, packaging, and literature.
Lipsey’s also collaborated with Larry Vickers on a series of Vickers Tactical Glock packages. In those projects, the distributor coordinated expert-driven configurations and expanded the line as customer response demonstrated continued demand.
By 2026, Cloessner remained active in contemporary pistol development as well as traditional firearms.
