Professional Biography
Dr. Sherman A. House, DDS, is a healthcare professional, former assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, former firefighter and emergency medical technician, former armored-truck messenger, former reserve police officer, defensive-firearms instructor, and emergency-medical educator. He originated the Civilian Defender training concept, which treats personal defense as a multidisciplinary preparedness problem rather than primarily a shooting problem.
House earned undergraduate degrees in law enforcement, cell biology, and philosophy from Gonzaga University. He completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery with honors at Meharry Medical College and later served as chief resident in a hospital-dentistry program. Before dentistry, he worked as a firefighter and EMT in Washington State while also working as an armed messenger for armored-transport companies. He subsequently served as a commissioned reserve police officer.
In 2016, House organized his varied background into the Civilian Defender framework and began offering branded courses the following year. The model asks what an ordinary person needs to recognize, avoid, manage, and survive during foreseeable emergencies or violent encounters. Its subject matter includes situational awareness, criminal behavior, physical preparedness, emergency medicine, self-defense law and aftermath, less-lethal tools, defensive firearms, and physical defense.
His medical instruction has included hemorrhage control, improvised trauma care, disaster wound closure, and disaster dentistry. These courses emphasize stabilizing an injured person when normal resources or immediate professional care are unavailable. House has also participated in scenario-based programs combining medical problems, firearms, critical thinking, and decision-making.
House co-founded the Paul-E-Palooza Memorial Training Conference with the late Dr. William Aprill following the death of instructor Paul Gomez. The event brought together instructors from firearms, medicine, criminal psychology, and combatives while raising money for Gomez’s children.
His firearms background includes Rangemaster pistol and shotgun instructor certifications and extensive continuing education across defensive firearms, combatives, law, and human behavior. The breadth of that work supports his central point: preparedness should address a range of likely problems rather than ending with firearm ownership or marksmanship.
