Professional Biography
Cris McRae is a U.S. Army veteran, firearms-industry product developer, inventor, and technical communicator. In April 2026, he joined Dead Air Silencers as Senior Product Manager for Accessories after more than a decade working in firearms product development and commercialization.
McRae joined the Army at 17 and completed multiple deployments before moving into civilian work. His firearms-industry career has included positions with Overwatch Precision and Magpul Industries, followed by his current role at Dead Air. Across those organizations, his work has connected end-user requirements with design, testing, manufacturing, launch, and continuing product management.
His professional experience includes product ideation, requirements development, research and development, testing, project management, market analysis, customer feedback, commercialization, marketing support, and post-launch refinement. That breadth gives him visibility into the entire process by which an observed user problem becomes a manufactured product.
McRae’s documented product work includes involvement with Magpul PMAG and AMAG magazines, D-50 drum magazines, MP5 furniture, CZ Scorpion accessories, slings, stocks and braces, cable-management systems, SIG P320 grip modules, Overwatch Precision triggers, and other firearm-interface components. He is also a named inventor or co-inventor on multiple U.S. utility and design patents involving magazines, follower systems, stocks, slings, arm-brace interfaces, and cable management.
His work is grounded in defining the actual problem before selecting a solution. Product development requires distinguishing meaningful end-user needs from temporary preferences, translating those needs into requirements, testing whether the design satisfies them, and refining the result according to evidence. McRae’s ability to communicate that process has made him useful both inside product teams and in public technical discussions.
He has also written about evaluating the quality and relevance of firearms information. His RECOIL article, “A Non-Idiot’s Guide to Getting Help on the Internet,” offers a framework for separating useful expertise from noise and for determining whether advice actually fits the question, user, and intended application.
