Buck Doyle | Follow Through Consulting Founder

Buck Doyle is a retired United States Marine Corps master sergeant, reconnaissance Marine, special-operations veteran, combat leader, firearms and tactics instructor, military adviser, technical consultant, writer, and the founder and CEO of Follow Through Consulting, LLC. His work connects more than two decades of military service with practical firearms instruction, leadership development, equipment evaluation, and technical advising.

United States Marine Corps Career

Doyle served more than 21 years in the United States Marine Corps, including approximately 17 years with special-operations organizations. As a reconnaissance Marine, he served with 1st Force Reconnaissance Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, and Marine Forces Special Operations Command units. His assignments and deployments included hostile-fire and combat environments across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

His leadership positions included team leader and platoon sergeant. He also served as chief instructor at Special Missions Training Branch, a role that required translating operational requirements into structured instruction, practice, evaluation, and performance standards. Doyle retired at the rank of master sergeant with multiple military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal with Valor.

Combat Injury and Return to Service

Published biographical accounts document that Doyle was seriously wounded during his third deployment to Iraq. He subsequently returned to operational service and completed another combat deployment to Afghanistan. That history is relevant to his later work because it reflects both the consequences of combat and his continued service after recovery.

Doyle’s combat experience has been covered in Mark Lee Greenblatt’s book Valor: Unsung Heroes from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, in which he is one of nine featured U.S. service members. His experience was also the subject of an episode of the Outdoor Channel series Fight to Survive.

Joint Expeditionary Team

After founding Follow Through Consulting in 2010, Doyle spent approximately four years contracting with the Department of Defense as a member of the Joint Expeditionary Team. In that role, he advised and assisted combat units in Afghanistan. The assignment extended his work from leading and instructing within Marine organizations to observing, supporting, and helping improve the performance of other deployed units.

Advisory work requires more than demonstrating an individual skill. It involves identifying what a unit needs, understanding operational constraints, communicating workable changes, and evaluating whether those changes improve results. That experience is closely reflected in Doyle’s later teaching and consulting.

Follow Through Consulting

Doyle established Follow Through Consulting to carry operationally informed instruction into the professional training market. The company initially focused on military units, then expanded its training capabilities in 2014 to include law-enforcement personnel and qualified civilians. Its work also grew to include corporate leadership, team building, product design and development, testing, and technical consulting.

The company name reflects a broader professional philosophy. A class can introduce knowledge and provide coaching, but the student must continue practicing, measuring performance, and refining execution afterward. Doyle’s associated phrase, “Never confuse effort with results,” summarizes that results-oriented approach: difficulty, intensity, or effort alone does not establish that training has produced usable capability.

Scoped-Carbine and Rifle Instruction

Doyle is especially associated with scoped-carbine and practical rifle instruction. His courses connect marksmanship with ballistic data, magnified-optic employment, target observation, positional shooting, movement, communication, terrain, and changing light conditions. Students are expected to confirm the relationship among their rifle, optic, ammunition, zero, trajectory, and actual point of impact rather than relying on assumed data.

The scoped carbine is treated as a flexible observation and engagement system rather than simply a rifle fitted with magnification. Effective employment requires the shooter to understand when to change magnification, how to build positions around available terrain, how to work across distance, and how to maintain awareness while using the optic. This places equipment within the larger task rather than treating it as a substitute for judgment or fundamentals.

Terrain, Position, and Environmental Variables

Follow Through training has made extensive use of natural terrain instead of limiting students to fixed square-range geometry. Uneven ground, elevation, vegetation, weather, wind, visibility, and improvised support require the shooter to adapt technique to the environment. A preferred position may not be available; the shooter must create the most stable and useful position the terrain permits.

Doyle’s coursework has also incorporated low-light and night conditions, including the use of white light, lasers, night vision, thermal systems, and illuminated optics. The technology expands capability, but it does not replace observation, identification, movement, communication, safe weapon handling, or decision-making.

Instruction and Coaching

Doyle’s experience as chief instructor informs a teaching model built around principles, observable performance, and correction. The objective is not merely to demonstrate techniques but to help students understand why a method works, recognize when it applies, and adapt it when conditions change.

He has increasingly described this process as coaching. An instructor can deliver information to a group; a coach observes the individual, identifies limitations, provides a focused correction, and evaluates the next attempt. That cycle—observe, correct, perform, evaluate, and refine—supports lasting improvement more effectively than simply increasing repetitions of an unexamined action.

Leadership and Team Development

Doyle’s military leadership and consulting work also extend beyond individual weapons performance. Team leaders and platoon sergeants must manage personnel, information, resources, risk, and mission requirements while building reliable collective performance. Follow Through applies that experience to leadership development, organizational communication, and team building for military, law-enforcement, and corporate clients.

This approach emphasizes outcomes and accountability. A leader must define the objective, communicate standards, observe actual performance, and adjust when effort does not produce the required result. The same feedback process that improves shooting or field skills can therefore be applied to teams and organizations.

Equipment Development and Industry Work

Follow Through Consulting works with equipment concepts, product design and development, testing, evaluation, and marketing. Doyle’s value in that process comes from translating operational needs into practical requirements and assessing whether a proposed product performs under realistic use conditions.

His work with Leupold provides a public example. Leupold has credited Doyle with contributing end-user perspective to development of the Mark 5HD riflescope. In a 2018 Leupold podcast with Kyle Lamb, the discussion addressed long-range shooting, positional work, optic design, and trends in practical rifle use. This relationship aligns directly with Doyle’s emphasis on scoped carbines and adaptable rifle employment.

Writing and Media

Doyle has been both a subject and an author in firearms and tactical publications. His work has appeared in RECOIL, Combat Tactics, Shooting Illustrated, Concealment, Skillset, Ballistic, SWAT, Black Guns, and World of Firepower. He has also appeared on two covers of RECOIL.

These publications extend his instructional reach by documenting equipment, techniques, training concepts, and operational lessons for audiences beyond his students. His inclusion in Valor and Fight to Survive separately documents the military experience behind that later instructional career.

Film and Television Advising

Follow Through expanded into technical and tactical advising for film and television. Doyle provided intensive weapons training to principal cast members of USA Network’s Shooter and served as a technical adviser on Skyscraper. Published professional material also associates his advising work with Without Remorse.

Screen-production advising is another form of knowledge transfer. The goal is not to turn performers into operational personnel, but to help them portray credible weapon handling, movement, communication, and tactical behavior while working within production and safety requirements.
