Professional Biography
Brian Hill is a firearms coach, martial arts instructor, and instructor developer with more than four decades of coaching experience. He began studying martial arts at age 14 and teaching at 18. Today, he is the owner and head coach of The Complete Combatant in Georgia.
Hill’s teaching centers on Deliberate Coaching, an instructor-development approach that separates subject-matter knowledge from the ability to diagnose and improve another person’s performance. Its framework—“Diagnostic. Predictive. Adaptive.” and “Measure. Refine. Perform.”—emphasizes observation, individualized corrections, objective measurement, and retesting. The curriculum incorporates cognitive interviewing, body-language analysis, and the psychological, physiological, and technical factors that affect performance.
He also teaches Image Based Decisional Drills, a program created by Shelley Hill that uses visual information to develop judgment and response selection. The exercises may require a student to disengage, communicate, use a less-lethal option, call for assistance, render aid, or apply deadly force when justified.
Hill’s listed professional credentials include Rangemaster Certified Master Instructor, Modern Samurai Project Certified and Endorsed Instructor, Force Science Analyst, and Massad Ayoob Group Deadly Force Instructor. His martial-arts background includes fourth-degree black belts in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Karate, a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo, and MMA conditioning credentials. He formerly owned Fusion Fitness and MMA, served as a reserve deputy with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, and has worked as a military trainer.
In June 2025, Hill was appointed to the National Rifle Association’s Education and Training Committee for the 2025–2026 term. He also provides expert-witness and consulting services involving firearms training, mixed martial arts, use of force, and self-defense.
