Official business: Boresight Solutions
Professional Biography
Ben Simonson is a military veteran, pistolsmith, firearms-training practitioner, and the founder and president of Boresight Solutions. He is an early influential figure in performance-oriented polymer-pistol customization, particularly the reshaping and texturing of Glock frames for serious defensive and duty use.
Boresight Solutions grew from Simonson’s effort to solve a problem with his own handgun. The factory grip did not fit or interface with him as well as he believed it could, so he changed its geometry, circumference, backstrap, trigger reach, and surface traction. He then evaluated the work through training, refined it, and began producing similar solutions for other shooters.
That origin remains central to the company’s philosophy. Simonson approaches the handgun as a human-machine interface: the firearm must remain reliable, but its physical relationship with the individual shooter can often be improved. The useful modification is therefore not the one that merely looks different. It is the one that better supports the user’s hands, mission, carry method, and performance requirements.
Simonson’s work became associated with grip reductions, backstrap reshaping, frame texturing, trigger-guard relief, improved access to controls, and complete duty or carry-pistol packages. His designs balance several competing requirements. Texture must produce traction without becoming unnecessarily abrasive. Geometry must improve access and control without weakening the frame. Mechanical changes must preserve the reliability margin required of a serious-use firearm.
Boresight Solutions emerged when extensive modification of polymer service pistols was considerably less common than it is today. Simonson developed methods through direct experimentation and high-volume training rather than by following an established customization formula. Many features that were once unusual—individualized grip reductions, targeted texture, control relief, and integrated ergonomic packages—subsequently became familiar throughout the custom-pistol industry.
His reputation was strengthened through long-term use by experienced instructors, law-enforcement personnel, and other professional users. Figures including Pat Rogers, Craig Douglas, Kyle Lamb, Tom Givens, and Hilton Yam have publicly discussed or evaluated Boresight Solutions work. Their feedback reflects an important part of Simonson’s development process: a pistol is built, used under demanding conditions, evaluated by knowledgeable shooters, and refined accordingly.
Simonson has also emphasized that custom work should begin with the user and the intended role of the firearm. A competition pistol, uniformed-duty pistol, concealed-carry handgun, and high-volume training gun may call for different priorities. Physical considerations such as hand size, finger length, reduced strength, injury, or arthritis can also make customization an accessibility solution rather than a cosmetic preference.
As Boresight Solutions expanded, Simonson translated elements of his individual craft into repeatable shop processes and standardized packages while retaining personally executed signature work. The resulting company sits at the intersection of pistolsmithing, ergonomics, product development, and practical firearms training.
P&S Connection
Simonson is part of the extended Primary & Secondary network as a subject-matter contributor on serious-use handguns, pistol configuration, ergonomics, and reliability. He appeared on P&S ModCast 245 — Setting Up Your Red Dot Pistol with Jon Hauptman, Buck Holly, and Scott Jedlinski.
His work fits several recurring P&S themes: equipment should be selected and configured according to the mission; modifications should be validated through training; professional-user feedback matters; and fashionable additions are not automatically useful. Simonson’s contribution is the practical translation of those principles into the physical design of a handgun.
