William “Will” Petty — Centrifuge Training Founder and VCQB Developer

William “Will” Petty is a veteran law-enforcement officer, firearms and tactics instructor, former counterterrorism instructor, and founder of Centrifuge Training. He is best known for developing Vehicle Close Quarters Battle, or VCQB®, as a structured approach to armed problems in and around vehicles.

Professional Biography

Petty began his law-enforcement career in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2003. His experience included service as a firearms instructor, Emergency Response Team member, and member of his department’s shooting team. In 2011, he moved to Abu Dhabi, where he worked as a counterterrorism instructor with the Critical National Infrastructure Authority.

He returned to American law enforcement in Texas in 2013 and subsequently worked in patrol and managed firearms programs for regional police academies. These roles combined operational experience with curriculum development, instructor education, and the administration of training programs.

Petty’s principal contribution is VCQB®, a systematic application of close-quarters principles to the vehicle environment. His instruction moves beyond simple claims about automobiles as cover and examines the interaction of ballistics, geometry, movement, positioning, observation, communication, weapon handling, and decision-making. Federal trademark records connect Petty directly to the VCQB name and document its use beginning in 2012.

Centrifuge Training has expanded into low-light operations, structure problem-solving, K-9 integration, patrol tactics, instructor development, performance-based skill building, range operations, and program consulting. Its current schedule continues to offer VCQB and other instructor-level courses for law-enforcement, military, and government personnel.

P&S Connection

Within P&S, Petty’s work is closely associated with vehicle tactics, empirical training, and teaching adaptable principles rather than memorized choreography. His instruction has helped shape professional discussion of how vehicles alter ballistic performance, exposure, movement, communication, and tactical decision-making.
