Aaron Cowan is the founder and lead instructor of Sage Dynamics, a firearms and tactics instructor, author, researcher, and equipment evaluator. His best-known contribution is the systematic testing, documentation, and instructor education that helped agencies evaluate pistol-mounted red-dot sights for duty use.
Professional Background
Cowan began his professional career in the U.S. Army in 1999 and served seven years in the infantry. His roles included rifleman, squad automatic rifleman, and designated marksman, with training and experience in small-unit tactics, close-quarters combat, and breaching. He later worked as a private-security contractor before entering federal and state law enforcement.
During more than ten years in law enforcement, his assignments included SWAT/SRT service, a sniper section, deputy SRT commander, field training officer, and training coordinator. This combination of military, security, patrol, tactical-team, and instructional work informed his later emphasis on realistic decision-making rather than firearms manipulation in isolation.

Pistol-Optics Research
Cowan authored Miniaturized Red Dot Systems for Duty Handgun Use, a periodically updated white paper examining pistol-mounted optics in a professional context. The paper addresses optic construction, mounting systems, duty holsters, maintenance, durability, documented failures, visual processing, reduced-light performance, threat focus, training, and implementation.
The significance of the project is its method. Rather than treating pistol optics as a matter of preference, Cowan gathered observations from training and equipment testing, documented both successes and failures, and revised his conclusions as products and available evidence changed. The seventh edition was released in 2023.
Sage Dynamics reports that the white paper has been used in whole or in part by more than 300 police departments worldwide when evaluating or supporting the adoption of red-dot-equipped duty pistols. Independent examples also show agencies citing or considering the paper during duty-handgun procurement. The work therefore reached beyond individual consumers and entered policy, equipment-selection, and training discussions.
Instructor Development and Agency Adoption
Cowan’s Red Dot Sight Instructor program extended the research through instructors responsible for building and maintaining agency programs. In a 2025 interview, he reported approximately ten years of teaching the course and roughly 1,500 instructor students. He estimated that those instructors could collectively influence the training of about 150,000 officers; that figure is Cowan’s projection rather than an independently audited count, but it illustrates the multiplier created by train-the-trainer education.
His work spans much of the transition from early institutional skepticism toward broad acceptance of duty-pistol optics. During that period, optic durability, mounting practices, battery life, holster support, training methods, and product quality all changed.
