Kevin, Roland, Chad, Richard, you guys know your shit about ammo. Any other experts feel free to jump in.

Please explain why/if 5.56x45mm is a better overall cartridge than 5.45x39mm. Any permutation of either cartridge applies. Does 5.45x39 possess any advantages over 5.56x45?

Which cartridge, loads, and projectiles best meet the fundamental requirements for quality modern combat ammunition:
  • Be blind to impact yaw

  • Limit penetration to 12-18”

  • Resist yaw in tissue, with no yaw earlier than 12”

  • Continue on shot line after penetrating tissue

  • Be barrier blind

  • Limit fragmentation

  • Perform consistently from 0 – 300 meters

  • Be accurate enough to engage human targets to 600 meters

Hint: It is not 5.45x39 mm in any readily available existing permutation....
