Youtube has taught me that Federal HST is the cat's ass in pretty much any weight or pressure. Expands reliably and penetrates deep. These are the four gel-test vids that sold me:

So there's 124, 124 +p, 147, and 147 +p. All penetrate deep and expand reliably in bare gel and denim plus gel.

Be aware that the Gold Dot G2s seems to be having teething issues, as multiple gel tests, including one by Dr. Roberts, have shown that the GD G2s fail to expand properly (note that the G2s are no longer on Dr. Roberts's list of acceptable duty ammo).

Can someone put me to the Dr Roberts website so I can investigate this?

If you're on Lightfighter, here is a dedicated thread by Dr. Roberts that details the problem he saw: http://www.lightfighter.net/topic/9-mm-147-gr-le-testing

He posted the same information on pistol-forum in an already started thread, which does not require registration to read: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread....Soon-To-Buy-In&p=289886&viewfull=1#post289886

The rest of that thread is fairly interesting, too.

John Johnston of Ballistic Radio also saw less than satisfactory results in another thread, and doesn't seemed to have resolved the issue yet: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread....7-grain-PT-9mm&p=269596&viewfull=1#post269596

I don't have Dr. Roberts's actual contact information, but I'm sure many people here correspond with him, given how he is a fixture in the community, and can help put you in touch with him.

Here's what the content of the post in question is:

So we had an opportunity to run some 9 mm 147 gr comparison testing for an LE agency, including gel and accuracy testing using a gen3 G19 with OEM barrel.

Had some surprising results.

9 mm Speer 147 gr G2 at 955 fps (accuracy 95-0x):
BG: Pen = 13.8”, RD = 0.53”, RL = 0.45”, RW = 147.5 gr
4LD: Pen = 20+”, RD = 0.35”, RL = 0.65”, RW = 147.0 gr (all rounds failed to expand)
AG: Pen = 10.5”, RD = 0.65”, RL = 0.54”, RW = 147.5 gr

9 mm Win 147 gr RA9B at 953 fps (accuracy 95-3x):
BG: Pen = 13.8”, RD = 0.55”, RL = 0.46”, RW = 147.5 gr
4LD: Pen = 15.5”, RD = 0.53”, RL = 0.50”, RW = 147.9 gr
AG: Pen = 17.5”, RD = 0.44”, RL = 0.53”, RW = 147.1 gr

9 mm Fed 147 gr HST at 998 fps (accuracy 96-4x):
BG: Pen = 12.5”, RD = 0.63”, RL = 0.42”, RW = 147.4 gr
4LD: Pen = 12.5”, RD = 0.56”, RL = 0.48”, RW = 147.5 gr
AG: Pen = 12.5”, RD = 0.63”, RL = 0.48”, RW = 146.6 gr

Bare Gel: Far left is Fed 147 gr HST control; top row is Speer 147 gr G2 PT, bottom row is Winchester 147 gr RA9B JHP

4LD: Far left is Fed 147 gr HST control; top row is Speer 147 gr G2 PT, bottom row is Winchester 147 gr RA9B JHP

While the bare gel results were as expected, this lot of Speer G2 did not fare well in the 4 LD testing. Keep in mind that early batches of HST had similar issues. ATK is sending out a new lot for us to re-test.

As usual, Fed 147 gr HST demonstrated outstanding performance--very consistent and highly recommended for LE agency use.

Our issued .45 is Gold Dot 200 gr +P. 9mm is Gold Dot 124 gr +P.
5.56mm is Federal 64 gr bonded JSP.
12 gauge is Speer Lawman 8 pellet 00 buck and Lawman Foster style slug. SWAT uses Federal Flite Control 8 pellet and Tru-ball slugs.

We are in the transition process to replace the Gen 3 17s and 21s with all Gen 4 21s.

9mm Federal 147 grain HST, standard pressure
5.56 Speer 64 grain GDSP
Federal LE133 00 Buck
Federal LE127RS Slugs

I've had to fill in the blanks at times with what was available, but for the most part this is what we issue. We've used Remingtion LE buckshot and slugs as of late when Federal ATK offerings are slim (when aren't they??). I've messed around with some of the Hornady 135 grain standard pressure 9mm too. I'd go over to it as supply doesn't appear to be an issue but I am leery about making a switch across the board as it is still relatively new on the scene.

Issued pistol ammo is Federal 40 S&W 180 gr HST's (XM40HC), rifle ammo is Federal 62 gr .223 Rem. (XM223SP1PB). I have no complaints about either. I have carried Hydrashocks and Golden Sabers in the past, but now I look specifically for HST's in whatever caliber I need.

My go-to, and what we issued at my former job for decades, is the 124gr +P Gold Dot. Observed performance in real world shootings, observation at autopsies, performance in gel testing, and against cars and other barriers, makes it IMHO one of the very best service rounds you can buy, in ANY caliber.

I was at the range yesterday trying some of the Hornady 135gr +P from my G17 and G19, I was happy that it hits POA=POI from my guns, and hits to the sights the exact same as my preferred 124gr +P Gold Dot. Shoots a bit tighter than the GD as well.

I think a guy needs to have several ammo choices already picked out in case they can't get their preferred duty/carry ammo resupplied. That happened to my department back in 2006, couldn't get GD that year, would have been a 10 month wait or so, we went with 124gr +P Ranger-T that time, it turned out to be a quality choice as well.

Civilian here.

I use 124 grain +P Speer GDHP in my Glocks. Why? Very good reputation and I happened into 500 rounds of it at a great price. And it functions in all of my Glocks.

I carry Fed 147 gr HST that I was issued, but there are quite a few other good loads available.
