Hi

I am in the market for a reliable handgun for home defense. I am considering a few options but could use some guidance from experienced members. What brands and models do you recommend for reliability, ease of use and effectiveness ? Also, any tips on essential accessories or modifications for a home defense setup would be appreciated.
Looking forward to your expert advice

Thank you

So, the easy button is a full-size Glock (G17, G47 I think, G34). Or any similar handgun (CZ P10F, Walther PDP, S&W M&P) would work fine. Pretty much just find the first one within your budget that you have access to and buy it. Before going any further, what is your budget, EVERYTHING included? That will dictate a lot.

If it is only for home defense, what is the rationale of wanting a handgun vs a rifle or shotgun?

What is your background/experience with a handgun?

First step is I would find a local range that rents handguns. Go and shoot many different ones. The simplest ones are the striker fire variety, such as Glock, sig, Walther, Smith and Wesson, etc. I prefer a full sized gun with a weapon mounted light as my home defense handgun.

Once you’ve found a gun you shoot well, find a reputable training class or two and put a few thousand rounds through it. I’d start with a basic pistol class, one or two days and then move on to something with some tactics built into it, such as how to manipulate your handgun while opening doors, etc. there are many “bumps in the night” that need to be investigated but don’t necessarily require a police response. Knowing how to move safely through your house with your chosen handgun is important.

Add the cost of training, training ammunition and defensive ammunition into your initial budget. For example, save for my old duty guns all of my pistols are 9mm. I buy 115gr ammo for training OR a mirror of my duty ammo if it’s available and cheap. After practice I’ll confirm zero with my defensive ammo (either 124 or 147gr hst) With ammo, consider your environment. Are you in an apartment or townhouse or single family home where over penetration is a concern? I’d spend a few minutes considering that. Also, if your state requires it or you have access concerns add a small safe into the budget.

All that said, my current go to is either a full sized Glock (either my 17 or my 35 depending on my mood) or my Staccato P because #bougie.

The rise of the machines. Why do we keep getting these bots? I’d rather deal with the Pro Israel or Pro Hamas drones/trolls.
