"Perspectives on the Miami Shootout" Ed Mireles

While not exactly typical of the AARs on this thread, had an opportunity to listen to a lecture "Perspectives on the Miami Shootout" given by Ed Mireles, Special Agent, FBI Retired and set up by John Murphy of FPF Training in Northern Virginia this weekend.

As most everyone knows, Ed was the guy who ended the Miami shootout and was seriously injured as a result.

The lecture was delivered at a local hotel conference room. The room was plenty big for the audience and comfortable. There were 27 attendees, most local but one from as far away as Orlando and one from New York. The lecture was scheduled for 5 hours and included a signed copy of Ed’s book “FBI Miami Firefight, Five Minutes that Changed the Bureau.”

Ed delivered a PowerPoint presentation on the shootout lasting about 3 hours. We’ve all read articles or even seen the TV movie on this incident. Several of those are inaccurate or flat out wrong, but Ed’s book and presentation gives an accurate, first-hand account. The presentation went step by step through the events leading up to the shootout and the shootout itself. Ed’s presentation included several crime scene photos not included in his book. These were really helpful to get a sense of the distances, orientation of the vehicles, etc. important to understand the event. Ed went into great detail and answered several questions during the presentation. After Ed completed the presentation, he answered questions for about another hour or so.

Ed is a down-to-earth guy who did an extraordinary thing that day back in 1986. He focused on his fellow agents and their sacrifices and minimized his.

If you have an opportunity to meet and hear Ed talk, take advantage of it. Not only will you get a first-hand perspective of an event that changed many things in the firearms and tactics field, but you’ll get to hear it from a great guy, someone who deserves our respect.
