I recently came across this NIJ document dating from 1971 containing two Level IV ceramic solutions from way back in the day, which are the AVCO PA-500 and the KT-1. It's quite interesting to see how far the industry has come since then. The document sure makes for a good read.

I looked over this document. Pretty interesting stuff for historical context.

I ran across one of the vests in the test, the Carborundum KT-1, in a dusty storage area at a department I worked for. It had a dark blue carrier and was marked "U.S. Secret Service", no less. I always wondered about dragging it out on the range and seeing what it would stop.

Sadly, no. I've been having fun holing "AR500"-brand plates with M193 from a 20" rifle, though...
