ECSI Wilderness First Aid


Delivery type: 16-hour, didactic, hands-on
Prerequisites: none
Class size: 9 - 12 students
Credential: Wilderness First Aid certification through ECSI (valid for BSA requirements)
Recertification: Every two years
Topics Covered: Basic adult first aid with an emphasis on limited resources, extended care, and evacuation considerations.

Basic Remote Emergency Care
Delivery type: 80-hour, didactic, hands-on, online mixed media
Prerequisites: First aid or first responder training highly encouraged
Class size: 9 - 12 students
Credential: Those certified below the EMT level will receive a WFR certification. Those certified at the EMT level or higher will receive a WEMT certification.
Recertification: Every two years
Topics Covered: This 80-hour course is designed for wilderness professionals and outdoor enthusiasts who want to increase their competence in assessing, treating, and evacuating the sick and injured from remote and resource poor environments. Our Basic Remote Emergency Medicine course is offered in two learning formats:
  • An 80-hour, ten day intensive course ideal for outdoor professionals, enthusiasts and military personnel who wish to complete the certification in a short amount of time. A seven day version of the course is also available to qualifying agencies.
  • A five week adult learning format which holds classes two nights and one weekend day per week. This class is ideal for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts who do not wish to take time off from work to participate in this class.
In order to receive certification as a WEMT, you must possess a current national or state EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic certification, or international equivalent. If you are not currently a certified emergency medical provider, you will be eligible for the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.

Mountain Travel and Rescue
Delivery type: 24-hour, didactic and hands-on skill building
Prerequisites: A desire to learn
Class size: 9 - 12 students
Credential: NSP MTR cert
Recertification: none
Topics Covered: Our Mountain Travel & Rescue (MTR) course is based on the program being taught by the National Ski Patrol. This course introduces students to working and traveling in the wilderness safely.
This 24-hour course is designed for outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who may need to work in a wilderness environment, who want to establish a base of knowledge and skill with working, traveling, and rescuing in the wilderness.
This course is offered in a single weekend format. Students will spend the first day learning skills through didactic instruction and hands-on practice. The second day is comprised mostly of field exercises to reinforce the core skills of the program.
