AAR: K&M Precision Rifle Training Comprehensive PR (3/24-27)

AAR - K&M Precision Rifle Training
Compressive Precision Rifle @ K&M Shooting Complex in Finger, TN
Primary Instructor: Shannon Kay
Secondary Instructors: Brian Allen, Jason Redding, Mike Rogan

Course Overview:

This is described by Shannon as the flagship course for K&M. It covers both the Basic & Advanced curriculum but also allows an efficiency of having to balance incoming student needs twice (gear issues, fundamentals of people coming into the ‘advanced’ etc). In our course, several cancellations led to us having 3 AI’s to 18 students which was great for us. Lots of personal instruction and support across the board. We did incur some weather; however the K&M team was able to adapt to the conditions and we were never too uncomfortable due to conditions (several covered shooting positions, etc).

This is a four-day course and starts out on day one being about 50/50 split between classroom and range time. The first day covers basically everything needed to get shooters up and going out to distance. Marksmanship/equipment/etc is covered in the classroom portion, then zero’ing, essential ballistics, and then students work in small groups in prone out to 1000-1200.

Day 2 evolved quickly to 30% or less time in the classroom and much range time solidifying prone shooting and extending that skillset to include movers, using reticle holds, & beyond.

Day 3 took everything we’d learned to day and brought that into more advanced positional shooting including a limited amount of sling supported positions but primarily barricade and obstacle work.

Day 4 was laid out as a PRS style competition (albeit time was not factored, only hits) including a mix of prone, modified prone, and several improvisational supported positions.

Impressions:

Shannon & his team clearly put a tremendous amount of energy into everything that they do. The facility itself must be the most impressive precision shooting rifle complex in the world, and each day we were presented with things we hadn’t seen before requiring us to know how to approach the shooting solutions from the ground up and not relying on things we had learned experimentally and just repeating them without thought.

The instruction was excellent as well. There was a focused practical approach to ensuring we had what we needed to advance to the next stage and everyone in the class (which included everything from first time shooters to seasoned PRS competitors) were both challenged and confident towards day 4. Shannon is a very clear and insightful instructor and his competitive background meshed well with his military experience to give us a well-rounded picture of the discipline. It was also very helpful to have Brian Allen’s perspective. Brian started shooting PR only a few years ago and rapidly excelled to be one of the top PRS shooters in the nation. Jason & Mike Rogan also had some key gems. They were all also impeccable spotters and if a shot was missed a correction as always available from them if you needed it.

Overall, I can’t recommend the course enough for any level of PR enthusiast. If you aren’t interested in taking the course I’d encourage you to attend one of their competitions just to see and shoot at their incredibly impressive facility
